“新年好呀，新年好呀，祝贺大家新年好！”这首歌曲可能很多人都听到过。实际上，在获得中文歌词并进入小学音乐课本之前，这首歌的曲调已经在美国唱了一百多年了。歌曲讲述了一个爱情故事，尽管结局悲惨，曲调却十分明快轻松。
故事的背景这样的：1848年，美国西海岸发现了一处丰富的金矿。第二年，也就是1849年，很多人都前去淘金挖矿，成为了近代历史上最早的一次Gold Rush，这批新来的人被称为“forty-niners”。
这首歌曲讲述的就是一位forty-niner的女儿，名字叫Clementine，意思是仁慈善良。
讲故事的是个小伙子，他唱到：在一首山沟里有个山洞，住着一个四九年来的矿工和他的女儿，姑娘的名字叫Clementine。接着，描述了Clementine的风度、衣着；有一天Clementine赶着鸭子去河边。。。
